Providence 1970: Walking Tour of Downtown Providence

Providence, RI
Image details

By 1960 downtown Providence was not only suffering from the effects of suburban flight but the problem was further exacerbated by the real barrier I95 created between downtown and the expanding west side. In 1961 a committee appointed by Mayor Reynolds created a master plan report titled "downtown Providence 1970" which detailed the current maladies and recommended proposed cures as inductive of urban renewal tastes of the time.

Providence 1970 will tour downtown from Kennedy Plaza to Cathedral Square revisiting the sites of the report, discussing what was done, what was not done, and what was done and then undone.

Tour will include projects by key MCM Architects such as Carl Warnecke, Paul Rudolph, SOM, Edward Durrell Stone, and I.M. Pei.
