Image details

Inspired by “A Bit of Japan is seen in the Eaves”, a handmade photo album that Junzo Yoshimura made during the time he lived and worked at the Raymond Farm in New Hope PA, (1939-1940). This exciting new program will take visitors on a trip to the New Hope Pennsylvania to find “a bit of Japan ” in its architecture and landscape. This trip brings guests to Nakashima Studios and the Raymond Farm. The tours are led by the curators and highlight the immaculate use of Japanese influence in each site’s architecture and landscape design.

Raymond Farm Center and Nakashima Woodworkers, New Hope PA

Tour Guide: William Whitaker

Shofuso’s architect, Junzo Yoshimura’s mentor, Noemi and Antonin Raymond settled at Raymond Farm in 1939, and modified a 18th century Quaker farmhouse with Japanese architectural elements. In 1943, the Raymonds vouched for George Nakashima and his family from the internment camp. A few years later, Nakashima established Nakashima Woodworkers in New Hope near Raymond Farm. George Nakashima designed and built this studio and residence with his knowledge and experience working at the Raymond’s architectural firm with Junzo Yoshimura in Japan.
